China blames the US for “violating its sovereignty” following US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who visit china’s breakaway region, Taiwan, yesterday.
“In disregard of China’s solemn representations, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi brazenly went ahead with her visit to China’s Taiwan region. This move seriously violates the one-China principle, maliciously infringes on China’s sovereignty, and blatantly engages in political provocations, which has aroused strong indignation among the Chinese people and widespread opposition from the international community,” said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi.
According to Wang, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan proves that some U.S. politicians have become “troublemakers” in China-U.S. relations.
“The United States has become the biggest destroyer of peace across the Taiwan Strait and for regional stability. The U.S. should not dream of obstructing China’s reunification. Taiwan is a part of China. The complete reunification of China is the trend of the times and an inevitability of history. China will leave no room for the Taiwan independence forces and external interference,” Wang added.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China in a statement it released today.
Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle according to the ministry.
China calls upon the US to take credible actions to ”strictly observe” the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués delivered on the “five noes” commitment made by the U.S includes not to seek a “new Cold War”; not seeking to change China’s system; the revitalization of US alliances is not against China; not support “Taiwan independence”; and not to look for conflict with China.
US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and several other Congress members started their Asia tour by visiting Singapore on Monday.
Their first official stop in a high-profile Asia tour has attracted international attention over Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan yesterday.
The visit is the first for a US House speaker in 25 years. It comes at a time when US-China relations are already at a low point.
During a phone call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping last Thursday, Xi warned the US not to “play with fire” on the Taiwan issue. However, neither side confirmed if Pelosi’s reported plans were discussed.
The congressional tour led by Speaker Pelosi includes visits to US Asian allies Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia.
