(SUDANS POST) – Former Sudanese President Omar al Bashir and some senior members of his regime have reportedly been moved to a safe place from Kober prison after gunmen suspected to be RSF soldiers attacked prison guards to free thousands of inmates.
A police source who spoke to Sudans Post on condition of anonymity said that al Bashir and some senior members of his government have been moved to a safe location for their own safety and to prevent them from fleeing from detention.
“The police have taken necessary measures to secure the safety of former President Omar al Bashir and members of his regime, who have been moved to a secure location. This move is also aimed at preventing them from fleeing the prison,” the police said.
Thousands of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) troops stationed in the capital Khartoum on April 15 launched attacks on several army and government locations in the capital Khartoum in an attempt to takeover the government.
The police source further said that gunmen belonging to the Rapid Support Forces in pickup vehicles attacked Kober prison guards at around 3:15 local time and freed all the inmates with exception of the pollical figures.
This development has raised alarms over the security situation in Sudan. The country has been struggling with political instability since the overthrow of al Bashir’s government in 2019.
“The move to secure the safety of the former president and his colleagues was made to ensure that they are not caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflicts,” the police source added.
The safety of al Bashir and his associates remains a critical point of concern for both domestic and international observers.
