ethioreview.org – Getachew Reda says some Tigrayan leaders have struck a secret deal with Eritrea calling it an “unholy alliance” that threatens peace and pushes Tigray back to war.
In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), senior Tigrayan political figure and Getachew K. Reda has accused factions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and elements of the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) of forming what he described as an “unholy alliance” with the Eritrean regime ,an arrangement he says endangers the future of Tigray and undermines the region’s push for peace.
“The so-called ‘alliance’ between the Eritrean regime and elements within the TPLF leadership as well as factions within the TDF has never had any tangible objective beyond granting the Eritrean dictator peace of mind by turning Tigray into the principal battlefield,” Getachew wrote in a post on July 21, 2025.
He claimed the alleged alliance is based on strict conditions set by Asmara, including a ban on efforts to reclaim Western Tigray, silence on the question of Tigrayan statehood, full acceptance of the Algiers Agreement, and the supply of military-age recruits for training by the Eritrean regime. According to Getachew, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has no interest in supporting Tigrayan leaders and views them merely as junior partners in a one-sided arrangement.
“In truth, I believe Isaias ,seasoned in the art of power preservation has made the rational choice. He knows precisely where his interests lie,” Getachew added.
He went on to accuse the current leadership faction of plunging the region into further crisis by allegedly preparing for military operations in Tigray’s Southern and Southeastern Zones. He described the move as a desperate attempt to seize power by force during the rainy season, at a time when he believes efforts should be focused on peacebuilding.
“The foreseeable and forewarned outcome of this unholy alliance… is the renewed declaration of war on our people,” he warned.
“Responsibility for the consequences lies squarely with the reactionary clique, senior military leaders, and above all, the President of the Interim Administration.” He noted.
